I use the ESV mostly now for English reading. I can often pick up on small mistakes in it, but that is true for all translations. I think ESV is the best modern American English language translation overall.
I agree with Richard ESV is my favourite translation and sometimes the Amplified Bible when I want a deeper understanding of something..
My preferred translation tends to vary. Every so often I get a new one 
But I find the most effective study method is to have at least 3 for comparison. If your interpretation only fits one translation, you've got some studying to do
